Media Buyers Fly Down to Business

Brian Steinberg with the Wall Street Journal reported on last week’s annual conference of the American Association of Advertising Agencies.

He reported: “The people who buy ads in droves are about to descend on Orlando in hordes. It comes at a time of seismic shifts transforming both the media landscape and the advertising world -- and particularly the role of the media buyer.”

“Those changes -- a result of new digital technologies that are fragmenting audiences and forcing advertisers to find new ways to market their products -- are reflected in the subjects up for discussion in Orlando. The conference's rather grand theme is "Now, Soon and the Future." Among the topics on the agenda: "How to Sell Non Traditional Media Ideas to Your Clients"; the "Shape of the Modern Media Organization" and the jargon-filled "Deconstructing Branded Entertainment" -- a reference to the idea of marketers financing a TV show or movie as a way to subtly promote their brand.”

Mr. Steinberg continues: “Much chatter this year is likely to center on marketers' increasing demands for better measurement of the effectiveness of their commercials. Advertisers are no longer content with simple measures such as circulation numbers or Nielsen ratings that measure how many people see a particular magazine, newspaper or TV show. Increasingly, marketers want an idea of how many consumers remembered an ad, for instance, or recalled it when making a decision to buy a particular item.”

“Driving this emphasis is the rise of increasingly measurable Internet advertising and a perception that mainstream ad outlets, like TV, have become less effective. Rising numbers of consumers have digital video recorders, which allow consumers to skip through TV spots.”

“As a result, media buyers are putting more resources into various techniques to measure the effectiveness of advertising."It's more and more important because more and more advertisers are questioning what their advertising is doing for them," says Jim Poh, a vice president and director of creative content distribution at Miami ad firm Crispin Porter + Bogusky.”

If the American Association of Advertising Agencies conference was focused on techniques to measure the effectiveness of advertising – shouldn’t you be as well?

Homeland Security and the FCC:
A Marriage Made in Heaven?

By Liz Sachs
Partner, Lucas Nace Gutierrez & Sachs and General Counsel, EWA

There probably aren’t more than a handful of agencies in Washington that don’t make some claim to Homeland Security responsibility. If you are following the post-Katrina hand grenades that the Michaels - Brown and Chertoff - continue to lob at one another, you might wonder why people aren’t running away from, rather than toward, this political hot potato. The likelihood is much higher of being a goat than a hero when you are charged with protecting the Homeland. It is difficult to prove that your efforts prevented something bad from happening, but easy to be held responsible if disaster strikes. No matter how much of the budget is flowing into this particular bucket, the potential downside remains considerable. But in a Washington world where just about everyone wants to be near the center of power, the flame of high visibility is irresistible even with the risk of being burned.

By comparison with lots of other agencies, the FCC certainly has a credible basis for claiming a piece of the Homeland Security portfolio. The critical importance of communications in disaster response is not a matter of debate. If we didn’t learn that during 9/11, it certainly was one of the take-aways from Hurricane Katrina. And it is generally accepted that communications of all types including, but not limited to, wireless is a linch-pin of the nation’s efforts to keep its citizenry secure from terrorist attack.

Talley Communications Corp Announces the Acquisition
of Electro-Comm West in Southern California

SANTA FE SPRINGS, CALIF. (January 20, 2006) --  Talley Communications Corp. announces they have acquired Electro-Comm West. Based in Van Nuys, California. Electro-Comm West served as a distributor to the wireless communications industry in the Western United States for 27 years.

Markets served by Electro-Comm West and Talley Communications include cellular, government, LMR, microwave, military, OEM, public safety, railroads, SMR/ESMR, telecommunications, telemetry, utilities, WISP, WLAN and others.

“I'm proud to announce that the Electro-Comm West owner, Larry Feige and his key personnel will join Talley,” said Mark Talley, President of Talley Communications.  “Electro-Comm West's customers have high expectations from years of exceptional service. Talley welcomes the opportunity to prove ourselves with each opportunity,” Talley added.

“When you serve customers for decades, "business relationships" turn into life long friendships,” said Larry Feige, owner of Electro-Comm West.  “It became apparent that the best way to take care of my customers, was to do it through Talley Communications. Their buying power and nationwide reach with five warehouses will allow me to offer a completely different level of service, while at the same time maintaining the customer support that I built Electro-Comm West on,” Feige added.
